Reading and Chess Programmes in Full Swing

This year, no less than 185 children are enlisted for a variety of summer programmes at the Centre: theatre, reading, chess, dance, creative writing and steel pan music..

Throughout the course of the past two weeks, 55 little bundles-of-joy worked on their reading skills. Boring you think? Not so! The kids hopped from station to station where they read amazing stories, got to do related art projects, participated in spelling quizzes and comprehension games. The whole idea was to prove to them once and for all that reading can be F-U-N! From all we can gather, we can safely say: "Mission Accomplished". The volunteer teachers from Our Lady of Guadalupe High School did fantastic. Thanks very much to all of them for giving back to their community in this way!

Also this week, 20 kids got an introduction in the game of chess. Before we knew it, conversation in break-time included excitement about pawns, knights, kings and queens... Thanks very much to Teacher David Coombs and his volunteers for sparking so much enthusiasm in the kids for this strategic game!
