Community Service Champions 2009

The 6th edition of the Belmopan Community Service Challenge, organized by the Centre in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Belmopan and held last Saturday, October 17, 2009, once again proved that Together Everyone Achieves More!

The Challenge invites teams of young people to complete various community service projects in Belmopan.  The aim of the Challenge is to 1) assist needy organizations in Belmopan; 2) promote the joy of Community Service with our young people and 3) promote team work.

This year, 5 brave teams took on the Challenge and worked their hearts out:  2-Time winners Marla's Angels scrubbed the hospital corridors, after surprising the patients with a serving of home-baked cookies - the youngsters and leaders of the Belmopan Methodist Youth Group laboured in the hot sun clearing 6-feet grass on the compound of the Belmopan Humane Society - while the Belize Girl Guides Association collected food items for the Red Cross' feeding programme as well as hygiene products for the Palm Centre and the Belmopan Cadets assisted at Marla's House of Hope in painting lockers and clearing the yard.

The teams were judged on punctuality, team spirit, organization and youth leadership, courtesy, task completion, creativity, cleanliness and preparedness.  The judges had the hardest challenge of all: to proclaim a winner...

Challenge 2009

Going home with the trophy and the prestigious title of the 2009 Belmopan Community Service Champions were Youth Pahn Faiya, the Baha'i Interfaith Junior Youth Group.  They too assisted in cleaning the hospital corridors, windows and walls with enormous vigor and determination.  In preparation for the Challenge, the youngsters -with their own hard-earned money- also prepared activity packages for the little ones in the pediatric ward!

Congratulations to all the teams who were not afraid to step up to the Challenge.  We hope to see all of you, and many more, next year!
