This coming Monday, July 2 at 6.30 p.m., the Embassy of Mexico invites you to a presentation on “The Maya Forest as a Garden: An Alternative Environmental History" by Dr. Anabel Ford
Dr. Anabel Ford will share her findings on the remarkable cultural legacy of both the ancient and contemporary Mayans, the “Maya Forest Garden”. By examining the evidence used to justify the assertion that the Maya agricultural practices have and are destroying their forest environment Ford proposes that, on the contrary, the loss of the Amerindian farming traditions such as those practiced by the Maya may currently represent the greatest threat to biological diversity in the Neotropics. This traditional system has maintained the Maya forest over the past 5,000 years and the living museum of El Pilar (Belize) showcases the Maya forest garden, an important intangible heritage that is now under threat.
The Book Centre has made a selection of books available on the subject (a.o. "Animals and Plants of the Ancient Maya; Maya Tropical Forest; Jungle of the Maya; ...) and is offering special book prices for the night of the presentation only! |
