MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR, CITY OF BELMOPAN
Message from the Mayor, City of Belmopan, Simeon Lopez

Message
from the former Prime Minister, Hon. Said Musa
"Many
Belizeans and Friends of Belize contributed financially to the
building of the George Price Centre for Peace and Development.
Architect
Gustavo Guerra gave generously of his time and talent. So too
did Bryan Mena, Engineer who did a marvelous job with the construction
of this building.
The
Rt. Hon. George Price, in whose honour this Centre was established,
has spent a lifetime devoted to the cause of peace and development
in Belize, the region and the world. The peaceful constructive
Belizean revolution led by this humble leader brought Belize out
of the darkness of colonialism and misery to the light of Independence,
sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He
led the Belizean people in a struggle for freedom through the
democratic process. Constitutional advancement was obtained without
destructive violence or bloodshed. By firm, honest and dedicated
leadership he mobilized the Belizean people for hard work. By
grounding the philosophy of the party and the nation on the principle
of the supremacy of God, the dignity of the human person and the
equal and inalienable rith with which all members of the human
family are endowed by their Creator, George Price is our National
Hero and the Father of the Nation.
May
this Centre serve to inspire our people, especially the young
people of Belize to hold fast to the moral and spiritual values
which have guided Mr. Price in his life of service to the Belizean
people."

Message from the past Executive Chairman of the Board, Anthony Chanona
When
the Government of Belize, under the visionary leadership of the
Rt. Hon. George Price, embarked on the mission to construct an
inland capital, the primary objective was to build a safe haven
for Belizeans fleeing the destructive ravages of Atlantic storms
and hurricanes.
It
was a relentless pursuit, shrouded at times, in partisan political
reluctance; but sheer determination and commitment prevailed,
and on August 1, 1970, the Capital City of Belmopan heralded its
birth.
Neither
this Herculean task of transforming pasture, mud and jungle into
a city or the successful global effort to rally international
support for a free and independent Belize ever symbolically attributed
to any one person or symbolized in any one structure. The humble,
pragmatic leadership of George Price discouraged such acclaim
to fame, as he has always preferred that such accolades be vested
upon others rather than himself.
But
a grateful nation, inspired by the young dynamic leadership of
Prime Minister Musa rallied many persons to task of constructing
a fitting edifice to Mr. Price and his heroic contribution to
Belize's development. Many were convinced that it was a noble
undertaking
many responded to his call.
Today,
the George Price Centre for Peace and Development is a proud landmark
within the City of Belmopan. It houses thousands of photographs
and countless literary works as archival testimony to the work
of a National Hero and Father of the Nation of Belize. It also
serves as venue for educational and cultural development; and
its close proximity to the University of Belize creates ready
access to students of Belize's political history.
The
Book of Luke, Chapter 4 Verse 24 reminds us
"No prophet
is honoured in his own country"; while Belizean radio personality
Seferino Coleman coined the phrase "noh wayt til di man ded
fu tel ahn ih gud".
The
Rt. Hon. George Price is blessed indeed to have lived the experience
of both scripture and man.
Welcome
to the George Price Centre for Peace and Development. Relive the
vision and the mission of one man to create a better Belize.
Anthony
Chanona
Chairman, Executive Board
