DOCUMENTARY: FAVELA RISING
Directed by Jeff Zimbalist and Matt Mochary
Winner of 24 national and international film festival awards, including Film of the Year from the International Documentary Association, this vibrant, gritty, music-filled documentary tells the inspiring story of Anderson Sá, the heroic leader of a transformative social movement in the slums (favelas) of Brazil's Rio de Janeiro: Grupo Cultural AfroReggae. The organization uses music and dance to rally against the violence and crime that the “favela” youth face every day. Through their vivid, disturbing and poetic filmmaking, first-time feature directors Jeff Zimbalist and Matt Mochary move beyond a portrait of despair to chronicle the community's transcendental fight for a better life, culminating in the inspiring ability to persevere and even flourish in the most unspeakable of circumstances.
Duration: 80 minutes
Entrance Fee: $5.00 – Friends of the Centre: FREE
Join our “Friends of the Centre Programme 2008” and receive special invitations to our events, reduced fees to our cultural presentations, trainings, etc. Visit www.gpcbelize.com for more information.

GOD, FAMILY, BOOTS AND BEER:
Contemporary Country Music and the American Idea
This mysteriously titled presentation by Mr. David J. Firestein is designed to explain how contemporary country music, a typically American art form, gives voice to such core American values as rural and small-town pride, hard work, love family, patriotism, and religious faith.
Firestein will play songs that articulate these (and other) themes. He also provides background on contemporary country music, with special emphasis on the music’s geographic reach, the demographics and socioeconomics of its listenership.
“Country like you have never heard before”
This presentation is hosted by the American Embassy in Belize.

These are the people fondly referred to by Mr. Price as “the salt of the Belizean earth”.

The Art of Alfonso Galvez
After 5 years out of public eye, the artwork of Alfonso Galvez emerges refreshing and clean; provocative but real; intending to play with your mind. His ideas rise to the pulpit of human growth. His art becomes a physical bi-product. It is the manifestation of his forever conscious life seeking harmony with divine mind almighty [God]. Mr. Galvez has graciously agreed to leave his art work on display at the Centre for an indefinite time.
Opening hours:
Monday to Friday: From 9.00 to 6.00 p.m. (except lunch hour). To schedule school visits or a visit outside of these hours, please call Elsie Alpuche at 822-1054. |
