GEORGE PRICE CENTRE ANNUAL SCHOOL OUTREACH PROGRAMME

GEORGE PRICE CENTRE ANNUAL SCHOOL OUTREACH PROGRAMME

GEORGE PRICE CENTRE ANNUAL SCHOOL OUTREACH PROGRAMME

BISCAYNE GOVERNMENT SCHOOL, BELIZE DISTRICT

This year marks the thirteenth year since the opening of the George Price Centre for Peace and Development, and it is the sixth year since the Centre commenced the tradition of inviting a school to visit Belmopan and the George Price Centre in commemoration of the birthday of the hero to whom the Centre was dedicated, the Rt. Hon. George Cadle Price. An invitation was extended to the Biscayne Government School in the Belize District, and on Monday, 16th January 2017 some 33 of their students from Standards 4, 5 and 6 accompanied by 3 teachers and 10 parent chaperones made the trip to Belmopan. The school delegation braved the wet weather and arrived at the George Price Centre at 8:00 a.m. to spend the day with us and participate in the program of activities that was set out for them.

The Chairman of the Executive Board of the George Price Centre, Mr. Mick Craig, welcomed the group which was headed by lead teacher, Mr. Eugene Contreras. Introductions were made all around and in the conversation which followed, the students all revealed that it was their first visit to the George Price Centre. It pleased the staff and Executive Board of the George Price Centre to be able to introduce them to what the Centre had to offer. They proceeded to tour the George Price Museum led by Mr. Mick Craig. Students showed a great deal of interest, asking questions and taking pictures to document their visit.

After the tour of the Museum, everyone enjoyed a small snack before sitting down in the Auditorium to listen to a speech by Mrs. Louise Willis, Deputy Mayor of the City of Belmopan. Deputy Mayor Willis shared with the visitors what she knew personally of the Hon. George Price and expounded on many other facts that she had come to learn about this great man, including that the building of the Capital City of Belmopan had been the brainchild of the Rt. Hon. George Price.

The Deputy Mayor went on to quiz the students on what they had learned about this national hero before the showing of a video documentary “George Price – Man of Purpose and Vision” which chronicled his life of service.

Following the documentary, the students were split into groups to play a selection of games set up for their enjoyment. The games required students to answer questions and give facts they had learned about this celebrated figure. Prizes were given for each correct answer.

Later, the school delegation accompanied by three members of the Senior Steps Group of Belmopan went on a visit to the National 4-H Centre. At the National 4-H Centre, they were introduced to the supervisor, Mr. Luke Ramos, who explained about the 4-H and the 4-H Centre’s activities. He also extended an invitation to the Biscayne Government School to start a club in their own area.  Following the talk, students received a tour of the facilities before returning to the George Price Centre for lunch.

The program of activities ended with a visit to the Assembly building. After lunch, the group of students, teachers and parent chaperones headed to the Assembly Building where they got to see where the two houses of Government, the House of Representatives and the Senate, meet to discuss and make decisions for the running of the country. Two staff members took turns to explain about the structure and the rules for the conduct of business of these two houses of government.  Toward the end of their visit, students were again quizzed and encouraged to share what they had learned.

Looking back on the day’s events with the Biscayne students, teachers and parents, it was clear that everyone learned invaluable lessons. The Rt. Hon. George Price who lived to served others and this country we call home, is a source of inspiration. Certainly, with a genuine desire to serve and a better understanding of our democratic process we can all look for ways to contribute and become better citizens of this beautiful jewel, Belize.
